Practice at home is a necessary part of any learning. So here is our quick Homework FAQ!
1. What is homework?
Homework can be of two types: a) practicing what we have already done in class and b) specific homework that the teacher may have given based on what we learnt in class.
2. Is homework important?
Umm, yeah. Class time may be enough to learn but practice really helps cement the concepts and make us perfect. Practice at home is also sometimes the bridge between one class and next. Doing your homework ensures that you are able to learn better in the next class. Hence proved – homework is important.
3. When should one do homework?
As an awesome piano teacher once told me, practice only on the days that you have your lunch 🙂
4. How do I do homework?
Excellent question and kudos for making it to Q4 of this FAQ!
It always helps to do homework in steps – gradually and regularly. For example – when practising to play a song on the keyboard, split as follows: Day 1- familiarise yourself with the notes and finger movements; Day 2 – focus on playing smoother and without breaks so that it actually sounds like a good song; Day 3 – practice the full set three to four times and record audio/ video to check your progress.
5. How can I make homework less boring?
a) Do homework in steps as explained above – it will help the children feel like they are progressing and keep them motivated.
b) Ensure that you do not record the efforts straight away, but after maybe 2 days of practice – share your recordings with your class group and the teacher to get lots of praise, stars and hugs!
c) Choose different aspects to practice everyday – singing/ playing/ listening etc.
And you can always ask the teacher specific questions if you face any problems during your practice. Good luck!
