Did you like this exercise? DO try the rest of the patterns too.
Do you think you will be able to make your own sentences in Ms Mridangamβs language too – you can start by saying 1 or more of the patterns together to form longer phrases.
Here are some yummy fruits Tootly sends for you! πππππππ
Dear Parent,
We hope the children are enjoying this discovery of new aspects and new styles of music. Using rhythm motifs like these is an art, and is well known in South Indian music as βKonokkolβ. For our limited use, it is an extremely useful tool to learn and internalise rhythm, even with all the twists and turns inherent in the pattern.
When saying this pattern, we are trying to assign equal time to each word, irrespective of its length.
So while saying a short word like ta-ka or app-ple it needs to be stretched to fill the same time as say a longer word like custardapple or takadimi.
It would help to practice along with claps (or a metronome). If the mridang bols are difficult, practice only with fruits first to get the concept fixed in your head. If you’d liek, do send us another recording – try doing all patterns in the Tootly video, to give us a better idea of how Prapti has understood it.
